How a Ukrainian video game defeated Russian misinformation and gained fans

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: A Ukrainian Gaming Triumph Amid Adversity

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl has become a symbol of Ukrainian resilience, achieving monumental success despite delays and targeted Russian disinformation campaigns. Released on November 20, the game broke records with over one million downloads and 117,000 concurrent players within two days, marking it as the most successful Ukrainian game to date. However, this triumph is bittersweet for its developers.

Volodymyr Yezhov, a former GSC Game World developer, tragically lost his life in combat near Bakhmut in 2022 while serving in the Ukrainian military. The ongoing war also forced part of the development team to relocate to Prague, ensuring the game's completion amidst the turmoil.

Adding to these challenges, a Russian disinformation campaign aimed to discredit the game. A fake video bearing a Wired magazine watermark falsely claimed the game was being used to recruit Ukrainian soldiers and collect private player data. This misinformation is part of a larger Russian propaganda effort, known as “Operation Matryoshka,” designed to spread distrust and disrupt narratives favorable to Ukraine.

About S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2

The game is a mix of first-person shooter and survival horror set in a reimagined Chornobyl Exclusion Zone. Players step into the shoes of “Skif,” a Ukrainian navigating a post-apocalyptic world filled with dangers and mysteries following a fictional second disaster in the area. Drawing inspiration from the novel Roadside Picnic and the film Stalker, the game immerses players in a chilling, atmospheric journey.
